The three kinds of partner
A factory makes the product itself.
You deal with the people who run the production line. Many factories prefer larger orders, and you manage the sample, the documents and the follow-up yourself.
A trading company buys from factories and sells to you.
You deal with one company, and the trading company deals with the factories.
A sourcing agent works for the buyer and usually charges a fee or a commission.
The buyer normally places the order with the factory directly.
None of the three is better in every case. The right choice depends on your order size, how much you want to manage yourself, and how much risk you can take on.
Questions to ask any partner
- Who makes the product, and can I see the specification before I order?
- Is the sample confirmed in writing, with the configuration and the items included?
- Which documents will I receive for my market?
- Who answers if the delivered product differs from the agreed sample?
- Who do I talk to, and how fast do they reply?
